What to Do With Your Hair When You Go Boating in Southwest Florida

If you live in Cape Coral or Fort Myers, boating isn't a summer activity — it's basically a lifestyle. We're out on the water year-round, and while I love that for us, I also see what it does to hair on a weekly basis in the salon.

Wind, salt spray, sun, and humidity are a brutal combination for blonde hair and extensions. The good news is that a little prep before you leave the dock makes a massive difference in how your hair looks and feels when you get back.

Here's exactly what I tell my clients before a day on the water.

🛥️ Before You Leave the Dock

Start with a protective leave-in. Before you do anything else, apply a leave-in conditioner or lightweight hair oil through your lengths and ends. This creates a barrier that helps repel salt spray and reduces how much wind and UV exposure can penetrate the hair shaft. Moroccanoil All-In-One Leave-In Conditioner is my favorite for this — it has UV protection built in, it's lightweight enough for fine hair, and it doesn't make hair greasy.

Style your hair in a protective style. Loose hair on a boat is a recipe for a tangled, knotted disaster by the time you get back to the marina. I always recommend one of these options:

  • A loose braid (one down the back, or two if you have long hair) — braids hold up beautifully in wind and keep your hair from matting together

  • A low bun or twisted updo

  • A braid tucked under a hat for maximum protection

The goal is to minimize how much your hair is flying around freely and rubbing against itself in the wind and salt air.

Put on a hat. A wide-brim hat or a baseball cap does double duty — it protects your scalp and your color from UV damage AND keeps your hair more contained. I love a chic wide-brim sun hat for casual days out, and there are some really cute options that are actually designed for time on the water.

🌊 While You're Out on the Water

Keep your hair up. I know it's tempting to let it flow in the breeze — and honestly the photos look amazing — but the longer your hair is down in the wind and salt air, the more damage you're doing. Give yourself a few minutes for the photo op, then put it back up.

Avoid putting your head underwater if you have extensions. If you're swimming off the boat, try to keep your extension bonds out of prolonged submersion, especially in salt water. If you do go fully in, rinse with fresh water as soon as possible and re-apply your leave-in when you're back on the boat.

Reapply your sunscreen with a stick formula near your hairline. This keeps your scalp and part protected without misting SPF spray all over your bonds and extensions.

When You Get Back to Shore

This is where most people drop the ball — they get home tired and salty and just go to bed. Don't do that to your hair.

Rinse with fresh water immediately. Don't let salt and minerals from the water dry into your hair. A quick rinse in the shower (even without shampoo) removes most of the salt and makes a huge difference.

Shampoo and use a hydrating mask. After a day on the water, your hair has been through it — UV exposure, salt, wind, humidity. A good shampoo followed by a hydrating treatment (I love Aluram's Hydrate & Repair Mask) restores moisture and keeps your color looking vibrant.

Detangle gently while conditioner is in. Wet hair is fragile, and after a boating day it's going to have some wind knots regardless of how well you prepped. Work through tangles gently with a wide-tooth comb while your conditioner is sitting — it makes a huge difference and prevents breakage.

Use Aluram High Shine Frizz Spray when styling. After a day on the water, humidity frizz is coming for you. A few spritzes of this while your hair is damp and then a quick blowout keeps everything smooth and shiny — it's my number one recommendation for every Florida woman, but especially after time on the water.

You don't have to choose between living your best SWFL boat life and having beautiful, healthy hair. You just need to prep before you go and rinse when you get back. That's honestly most of it.

FAQs About Boating and Hair Care in SWFL

Does salt water damage hair extensions? Yes — salt water can dry out extension hair and weaken bonds over time. Prep with a leave-in before, rinse with fresh water after, and use a hydrating mask regularly.

How do I protect my blonde hair from turning green or brassy on the water? Salt water and minerals can shift color tone. A UV-protectant leave-in before you go, a clarifying shampoo after, and regular toning appointments help keep your blonde exactly where you want it.

What hairstyle is best for boating? A low braid or bun is your best friend on the water — it protects your hair from wind, tangling, and minimizes UV exposure. Tuck it under a hat for maximum protection.

How often should I deep condition my hair if I boat regularly? Weekly. If you're on the water regularly in Southwest Florida, a hydrating mask every week is essential to keeping your hair healthy between appointments.
